Independence is real double edged sword; yes, you
have flexibilit y and independence of action but
not the support mechanisms of a group operation.
Good owners are the key here without their
support and commitment there can be many sleepless nights.
Does the Alex Perry Hotel and Apartments have any initiatives that
encourage guests to book direct? If so, what are they?
We have a great program which provides rewards and incentives for direct
bookings. We have some fun with this program so the o erings can be quite
unique. The real strength is the personal following that or frontline sta have

The Alex Perry Hotel and Apartments joined as a member of the
Accommodation Association earlier this year. Why did you decide to join,
and what are your perceived values as a member?
My response is more a case of why would you not be involved. All industries
need a considered, educated and reasonable collective voice, AAoA provide
this, along with the added bonus of a CEO from hospitality management who
understands firsthand the issues faced.

On September 2 at the prestigious Sydney Town Hall, HM had the honour of hosting the 2016
HM Awards for Hotel and Accommodation Excellence, presented by Sealy Posturepedic,
which are now in their 14th year and continue to go from strength to strength.
At the gala presentation dinner I was proud to announce we had a record number of
nominations again in this year's awards that resulted in more than 3000 people, departments,
properties and chains being nominated.
We also had a record audience in attendance at the 2016 HM Awards, with 700 people
packing Sydney Town Hall to see 67 awards handed out, which was the most ever.
The HM Awards span Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and selected South Pacific nations and it
was pleasing to see this year the ever increasing involvement of many hotels across the entire
region, particularly those in Fiji, the Cook Islands and New Zealand.
Another very pleasing involvement in the HM Awards was that of our presentation partner
Sealy, and co-hosts AHS, the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School and
ponsors -- all of whom have been aligned with the event for a number
ade -- and our Award Presenters and Supporting Companies, nights
n. On behalf of the HM magazine team, thank you again for your
-page section dedicated to the winners starting on page 32 and please
gratulate the winners, highly commended recipients and finalists.
