Home' Hotel Management : HM AUGUST 2016 Contents One of Asia-Pacific's fastest-growing privately-held hospitality companies,
Hawaii-based Outrigger Enterprises Group has been creating headlines in
recent years for its growth across the region and its recent sale of contracts to
While the company, which been owned and operated by the Kelley family for the past
67 years, might have recently offloaded some assets in Australia, the country is still firmly
on the radar for Outrigger as are other nations across Asia-Pacific.
To find out about the company's forward strategy and growth plans, HM sat down
with Outrigger's President and Chief Executive Officer, David Carey, who has been in
the role since 1988, at the company's head office in Honolulu.
David, we have seen significant growth for Outrigger across Asia-Pacific in
recent years. What are your plans for further expansion in the region?
You're right, James. Outrigger has been on an aggressive push to enhance its portfolio
across Asia-Pacific and the Indian Ocean over the past decade. As part of that strategy, in
2014 we introduced Outrigger Resorts as our dedicated beachfront resort brand and aim
to be known as the premier beachfront resort brand in the world.
Today the Outrigger Resorts brand includes nine world-class beachfront resorts in
some of the world's most sought after island destinations, including Hawaii, Guam, and
Phuket, Thailand, along with our most recent acquisitions over these past three years in
Mauritius, the Maldives, Fiji and Koh Samui, Thailand.
We continue to look at opportunities for further expansion of the Outrigger Resorts
brand with our eyes set on warm water beachfront resort destinations around the world.
Your goal is to establish Outrigger Resorts as the premier beachfront resort
brand in the world... tell us about that.
Brand clarity is a top priority. Currently we are laser focused on enhancing our return on
investment operationally and delivering the highest guest experience across the Outrigger
Resorts brand. Ultimately, the quality, authenticity and warmth of the guest experience
our hosts create is vital to our growth as a company and future plans for expansion.
As part of that focus we have rolled out a series of
Signature Experiences across our Outrigger Resorts
portfolio, which are an array of amenities and cultural
programs that help our guests immerse themselves in the
unique sense of place at each of our iconic beachfront
destinations. These new brand standards help to create
exceptional experiences where 'Local Culture Meets
World-Class Hospitality' for all Outrigger Resorts' guests.
The new Signature Experiences are true to each
Outrigger Resorts destination. Most are complimentary for
guests and include local arrival greetings, welcome in-room
amenities, local cultural displays, sunset gatherings for
participatory activities such as torch lighting and blowing
of the conch shell, and vow renewals on the beach, which
are very popular at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort and
Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort in Hawaii. There are
also weekly manager's receptions for guests to share holiday
experiences and create lifelong connections, as well as a wide
variety of cultural activities or exclusive off-site excursions
for our guests to interact with the local community.
Will that involve the sell-o of more assets like
the recent transactions with Mantra in Australia
Outrigger pursues opportunities that best fit both our overall
strategy and our investment criteria. A strong real estate
and hospitality market in Australia and Hawaii predicated
our recent asset sales to Mantra, along with our ongoing
corporate and branding strategy to acquire and expand our
beachfront real estate in iconic locations around the world.
The family-owned Outrigger Enterprises Group has firm plans to re-enter Australia, become the world's leading
beachfront resort company and help the environment, President and CEO, DAVID CAREY, reveals to HM,
alongside a promise that brand clarity is a top priority for the Hawaii-based accommodation business.
